How to register for the NHIE

You register for the NHIE with the test vendor for your state and pay when you book. In most states that is PSI, through EBPHI's own PSI page or by phone at (855) 807-3992. Florida, Nevada, and Texas use Pearson VUE, and six states book through a PSI page of their own.

Find your state's vendor

EBPHI keeps the list on its Register for the Exam page. Read on October 25, 2026, it sends these states to their own page:

Every other state, including states with no license, books through EBPHI's PSI page or (855) 807-3992. Illinois, South Dakota, and Washington add questions of their own to the NHIE.

Steps to register

  1. 01

Check whether your state approves you first. In Oklahoma and Washington the test shows "Authorization Needed" on PSI until the state approves you. In Nevada you pay through the Real Estate Division before you book. In Texas you book with the TREC ID on your eligibility letter.

  2. 02

Open your state's booking page from the table, or EBPHI's PSI page, and sign in or make an account.

  3. 03

Pick the National Home Inspector Examination, then a test center near your zip code and a date.

  4. 04

Pay when you book. Test centers don't take payment, and EBPHI says the fee is nonrefundable.

  5. 05

Keep the confirmation number. You bring it to the test center with your ID.

You have one year from the day PSI receives your fee to sit the exam. For changing a date, what to bring, and the rules in the room, see NHIE exam day. To ask for an accommodation, contact the vendor before you book; the steps are in how to get extra time on the NHIE.

Where the documents disagree

EBPHI's FAQ names seven states that test through a state administrator, while its booking table and PSI's bulletins send Texas and Vermont to their own pages too. One EBPHI page still names an older vendor for Illinois, South Dakota, and Washington. The phone numbers for the state portals also differ between EBPHI and the state bulletins.

When two documents disagree, go by your state board and the bulletin on your state's booking page. For each state's rules, see home inspector license requirements by state.

Questions people ask

Can I take the NHIE online?

Not today. EBPHI says the exam is given at test centers, and PSI's booking pages list the NHIE as onsite at a test center only, in every PSI state checked on October 25, 2026. A 2024 Washington bulletin describes a remote option, but Washington's live booking page offers only test centers.

Can I register for the NHIE by phone?

Yes. EBPHI lists PSI's line, (855) 807-3992, and asks you to say clearly that you want the National Home Inspector Examination. Have a card ready, because you pay when you book.

How much does it cost to register?

$225 in most states. EBPHI names Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, South Dakota, and Washington as states with a different fee, so check your state's booking page.

How far ahead do I need to book?

There are no walk-ins, so book before the day you want. The Texas and Nevada Pearson VUE handbooks ask for at least 24 hours when you book by phone.
