ASHI certification with ACI membership replaces the 80 hours and the exam. So does a NAHI certification issued on or before July 2, 2020. Anyone licensed for at least 3 years in another state can apply by Fast Track Endorsement.

A 2015 rule bars a retest after 3 failures in a row until you show more education. PSI's national handbook allows unlimited retakes, so the Vermont rule is the stricter one.

How long it takes in Vermont

Vermont asks for 80 hours of approved education and a pass on the NHIE, with no field work. Your exam result stays good for one year from the day you pass. Vermont sets no minimum time; the hours and the exam are the floor.

Home inspector pay in Vermont

BLS puts the median pay for construction and building inspectors in Vermont at $66,580 a year in May 2025, against $74,690 for the whole country. BLS counts about 120 people in that job in the state, and home inspectors are one specialty in the group, next to city and county code inspectors.

The number leaves out the self-employed. An inspector who owns the business is self-employed, so that pay isn't in it. For what owners report, see how much home inspectors make.
