What score do you need to pass the NHIE?

You need a scaled score of 500 to pass the NHIE, on a scale that runs from 200 to 800. EBPHI doesn't publish how many correct answers that takes, because the passing point is set for each version of the exam.

How the scaled score works

Your raw score is the number of scored questions you answer correctly. EBPHI converts it to a number between 200 and 800, and 500 passes.

The conversion exists because there's more than one version of the NHIE, and some versions are a little harder than others. A scaled score lets every version report on the same scale. EBPHI compares it to the scoring on the ACT and SAT.

Who sets the passing point

The NHIE is criterion referenced. Your answers are measured against a set standard, not against other candidates, and there's no quota of passes.

A panel of subject matter experts rates how hard each question is. Working with a psychometrician, a specialist in test scoring, the panel sets the passing score for that version. The psychometrician also runs a statistical check after each round of exams.

Why there's no number of questions to aim for

EBPHI doesn't publish the conversion from raw score to scaled score. Each version has its own passing point, so no single count of correct answers fits every version.

A page that gives you a fixed percentage to hit is guessing. The safer plan is to know the whole outline well enough that the exact cut doesn't matter.

What your score report shows

  • In the United States, you get your score report at the test center before you leave.
  • A passing report might show your scaled score, or only the word PASS. It depends on your state and test center.
  • In most states, a failing report shows a graph of how you did in each content area. That graph is the best map you have for a retake.
  • The score isn't sent to your state for you. You submit it to your licensing board yourself.

EBPHI also says a score above 500 isn't a sign of more advanced knowledge. A pass is a pass.

How practice scores work on this site

Because the conversion isn't published, the free practice exam here reports a raw percent and a band, never a scaled score. A practice score between 200 and 800 is an estimate of a conversion EBPHI keeps to itself.

For the rest of the exam format, see the National Home Inspector Exam guide. If you've already failed once, see what to do differently on a retake.

Questions people ask

Is 500 out of 800 the same as 62.5 percent?

No. 500 is a point on a scale, not a share of questions. The scale starts at 200, and the raw score behind a 500 depends on the version of the exam you sat.

Do the pretest questions count toward my score?

No. 25 of the 200 questions are pretest questions that are not scored. Nothing marks which ones they are, so answer every question as if it counts.
