Is the NHIE accepted in Canada?
In one province by law. British Columbia's licensing rules list the National Home Inspector Exam (NHIE) as one of four exams that qualify you. Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec don't name it, though you can book the NHIE anywhere in Canada through PSI.
Checked on October 4, 2026
Province by province
This table shows what each province with home inspector rules asked for on October 4, 2026. Provincial fees are in Canadian dollars.
| Province | Licence? | Is the NHIE named? |
|---|---|---|
| British Columbia | Yes, through Consumer Protection BC | Yes, as one of four exams that qualify you |
| Alberta | Yes, through Service Alberta | No. Alberta names no exam |
| Quebec | Yes, a Regie du batiment du Quebec (RBQ) certificate, required from October 1, 2027 | No. The RBQ gives its own exam on Quebec rules |
| Ontario | No. The 2017 Act is not in force | No |
We found no licence for home inspectors in the other provinces or the territories. We also found no provincial page that says so outright, so check with your province before you rely on it.
British Columbia
BC's Home Inspector Licensing Regulation says an applicant must pass one of four exams. The fourth is "the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors' National Home Inspector Examination (United States)." The exam is only one step. You also need at least 150 hours of approved training, 50 hours in the field with approved licensees, and a peer recommendation letter.
One point to settle first. Consumer Protection BC's licensing page labels that line with the name of a different group, the National Home Inspector Certification Council, and links to that group's own exam. Ask Consumer Protection BC which score report it will take before you book. The full list of steps and the 2026 fees are in the NHIE and the BC home inspector licence.
Alberta
Alberta's home inspector licence page gives two ways to show your training. One is a diploma or certificate from an approved school, plus a test inspection under supervision. The other is an approved designation or licence.
The approved list includes a home inspector licence from Consumer Protection BC. It also includes the National Home Inspector (NHI) designation from the National Home Inspector Certification Council. That council's fee sheet says it will accept the NHIE as an equivalent to its written exam, with valid documents. Neither Alberta page names the NHIE, so treat these as routes to ask about, not a promise.
Quebec
The RBQ has issued residential building inspector certificates since October 1, 2024, and needs one from every inspector starting October 1, 2027. The entry certificate, Class 1, calls for a college program of at least 600 hours.
Quebec's rule lets someone licensed in another province skip the training rules. That person still has to pass the RBQ's exam on Quebec rules. The NHIE is not named anywhere in the regulation.
Ontario
Ontario passed the Home Inspection Act, 2017, but the Act carries the note "THIS ACT IS NOT YET IN FORCE." It starts on a day the province has not named. Until then, Ontario has no home inspector licence and no required exam.
How to take the NHIE in Canada
EBPHI's registration page names PSI as the test provider for all provinces. You register online at PSI or by phone at (855) 807-3992.
- Fee. $225 per test, the same figure EBPHI gives for most states, with no currency stated.
- Where. EBPHI says the exam runs at more than 300 test centers in the US and Canada.
- ID. PSI's candidate bulletin lists a Canadian government issued ID as acceptable.
- Score. In Canada, the score report is mailed to you, not handed over at the test center.
- Retakes. As many as you need, with a 30 day wait between them.
The exam itself is described in the National Home Inspector Exam guide. BC's own rule calls it the United States exam, and there is no Canadian edition, so study the exam as EBPHI writes it.
Canadian associations
The main Canadian groups we checked run their own exams. The Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors (CAHPI) uses the CAHPI National Exam, 212 questions in 4 hours. CanNACHI has its Associate Level Examination. Neither names the NHIE on the pages we read.
The National Home Inspector Certification Council is the exception. It accepts the NHIE in place of its own written exam toward its NHI designation. For US groups, see which home inspector associations require the NHIE.
Questions people ask
Is the NHIE the same exam in Canada?
Yes, as far as EBPHI's pages show. EBPHI and its test vendor PSI describe one exam given across the US and Canada, and neither mentions a Canadian version.
Does Ontario require a home inspector licence?
Not yet. Ontario passed the Home Inspection Act in 2017, but the province's law site still says the Act is not in force as of September 30, 2026.
Does Alberta accept the NHIE?
Alberta names no exam at all. It asks for an approved home inspection education plus a test inspection, or an approved designation or licence, such as a BC licence.
Is the NHIE fee in Canadian or US dollars?
EBPHI lists the fee as $225 per test in most states and in Canada, and does not say which currency. Check the amount when you register with PSI.
