Question 1 of 10
What is required of slip joints?
The answer is CA slip joint is meant to come apart, a nut over a gasket that fingers or pliers can undo, which is the point of the rule. Slip joints must be accessible. Nothing in the definition calls for glue, brazing, or a particular material.
Question 2 of 10
A house on well water has dirt and debris in the toilet tanks. How much weight does this clue to copper tubing failure carry?
The answer is DReading debris as a strong clue everywhere ignores the water source. On a well, debris and dirt in a toilet tank are common, so the manual treats debris as a clue mostly where the house is served by municipal water.
Question 3 of 10
A gate valve is leaking at the nut on top. What is true of tightening the nut?
The answer is DA permanent repair is the likeliest wrong pick. That nut can loosen with use and age, and tightening it can sometimes stop the leak, though only for a while.
Question 4 of 10
Which statement about the temperature limiting device in shower valves and bathtub valves is correct?
The answer is ABoth shower and bathtub valves should carry a device holding the water to 120 degrees F or less, and testing that function is not something the home inspector is required to do. A test at each valve is what makes the other 120 degree answer wrong, since its number is right. The 140 degree figure appears nowhere in this part of the manual.
Question 5 of 10
During a whirlpool bathtub test, debris shoots out of the return jets. What does the manual note about this?
The answer is DA failed pump is the alarming reading, and the manual does not draw it. Debris frequently comes out of the jets, and more so when the pump has gone unused for some time. Water below the highest jet is a reason not to start the pump at all.
Question 6 of 10
A shower has a 1-1/2 inch trap. How long usually should its fixture drain be, at most?
The answer is B8 feet belongs to the 2 inch trap, so it is the neighboring number here. With the smaller 1-1/2 inch trap, the length usually should stop at 6 feet. The manual adds that the trap and the fixture drain often cannot be seen.
Question 7 of 10
In a bathroom, the ceiling directly above the sink measures 78 inches. How should this be treated?
The answer is BThe height over a sink is not defined, which makes passing it look safe, but the ceiling must still allow safe use of the sink. IRC 2018 R305.1 sets bathroom ceilings at 80 inches or more, so a lower ceiling above a sink may need evaluation. Eighty inches is also the shower figure, but it is not limited to the shower.
Question 8 of 10
What sets a tower style flush valve apart?
The answer is CA flapper lifted by a chain describes the usual flush valve, the one a tower style valve is contrasted with. The tower style valve instead has a cup fitting over the opening. Compressed air belongs to pressure-assist toilets and two buttons to dual flush toilets.
Question 9 of 10
A home inspector finds a 3/4 inch relief valve extension pipe from a water heater ending above a garage floor. What is the minimum air gap?
The answer is CA 3/4 inch gap matches the pipe size, and that is the slip this item invites. The gap in most cases should be twice the opening size or more, and twice 3/4 inch is 1-1/2 inches. Two inches is the figure for a 1 inch bathtub spout.
Question 10 of 10
Ultraviolet light is used in water treatment as:
The answer is ATaking out heavy metals is the work of reverse osmosis, and light removes nothing from water at all. Ultraviolet light disinfects, and bacteria, worms, and some viruses are what it kills. The other disinfection method named is chlorination, and it is the more common of the two.
