Heating practice questions
10 free heating questions in the style of the National Home Inspector Exam, each with the answer and the reason. The official outline calls this task "Heating" and gives it 5% of the exam, about 9 of the 175 scored questions.

Question 1 of 10
Which method of heat transfer moves heat through solid matter?
The answer is CConduction passes heat molecule by molecule through a solid. Convection needs a gas or a liquid to circulate, so it cannot move heat through a solid wall or an oven door.
Question 2 of 10
About how much of a draft hood furnace heat exchanger can a home inspector see?
The answer is AA fifth is roughly what shows on this type, and a mirror with a flashlight is how that fifth gets examined. On an induced draft furnace almost nothing of the component can be seen.
Question 3 of 10
Which component does a vented decorative fireplace not have?
The answer is CA vented decorative fireplace is three parts, a cabinet, a burner and its controls, and a vent, and the heat exchanger that a furnace or a room heater carries is absent. The vent option is the tempting one for candidates who confuse this appliance with the unvented kind, which is the appliance that has no vent.
Question 4 of 10
A home inspector finds a vent system rising 3 feet above the flue collar of a gas water heater. How should this be reported?
The answer is DMeasured from a flue collar or draft hood, a vent system should rise 5 feet or more, so 3 feet is short. The 12 foot option is the strongest distractor because that figure sits in the same sentence, where a gas wall furnace is measured from its bottom instead.
Question 5 of 10
A vent connector is loose where it enters a chimney. What two things could follow?
The answer is DAt a chimney the connector should be secured, and it should also be sealed, and the manual names both consequences of leaving it as it is. Cooling and condensation is the best distractor because it is the consequence formula the manual repeats through the connector length and offset defects, and it is not what it says about this joint.
Question 6 of 10
What does the spinning disk inside an oil burner's blast tube do?
The answer is DThe disk stirs the air stream, and that turbulence shapes the flame to fit the refractory chamber and makes fuel use more efficient. Metering the oil is the pump regulator's job, and the flame sensor is a separate component altogether.
Question 7 of 10
A home inspector finds an oil appliance venting into a masonry chimney with no cap of any kind at the top. What does the manual recommend for that chimney?
The answer is BA chimney used as the vent needs no vent cap, and a rain cap is recommended on every chimney. A listed vent cap is the strongest distractor because it is what a Type L vent terminates with, and that requirement belongs to the Type L vent rather than to a chimney.
Question 8 of 10
A home inspector finds a portable heater standing in the only bedroom of a house. What may that indicate?
The answer is COne reading of a portable heater is an inadequate required heat source; the other is an occupant who is cold natured. The removed heater option is the strongest distractor because it would explain the same observation, but it is not one of the two readings given.
Question 9 of 10
What should water pass through on its way into a hot water boiler?
The answer is DThose two devices are what the manual asks for on the supply into the boiler, and a newer boiler may add an automatic fill valve after them. The relief valve pairing is the best distractor, and both of those parts work on discharge rather than on the water coming in.
Question 10 of 10
A home inspector finds a wet return with no equalizer pipe and no Hartford Loop anywhere at the boiler. Which statement about these two devices is correct?
The answer is AThe rule is stated for every steam heating system that has a wet return, with no exception for pressure or for length. Answering one or the other misses that the two devices do different jobs: the equalizer matches the pressure and the loop sets the height of the connection.
